Cancer Mood Board

Summer Solstice is here, and with it comes Cancer season! Cancer may just be one of the most common placements amongst the people closest to me so I’m intimately familiar with the archetype and I spend a lot of time thinking about it, trying to unravel it. Today I’m doing the same thing, just publicly and with some of my favorite aesthetic finds that reflect Cancer like moonlight on the water.

Gloopy Nails

Nail Design by Ali from Nales in Phoenix

A few months ago I saw my friend Deni at the bar where she works with the most stunning and unusual nails I’d ever seen. And while instances of this style are popping up all over the internet, I still can’t find a name for the trend?? So for the purpose of this post, we’ll call them gloopy nails.

The style involves 3d globs of acrylic sculpted by the artist to create a glassy, textile experience. Cancer is a water sign ruled by a luminary, so any visuals that mimic water reflecting light are going to be pinging Cancer signals left and right.

Water Color festival Marketing

Poster Design by Meredith Smallwood

The graphic design slot in this issue goes to Meredith Smallwood, distinctly gifted illustrator who I found via this show stopping poster design.

Here she uses water colors, subtle celestial and psychic imagery to promote a series of shows.

The way the colors flow softly into each other and the glow of some elements remind us of intuitive and flowing Cancer.

You didn’t think we’d get through a Cancer season blog without a mermaid reference (or two) did you?? You silly little goose.

These are stills from a 1968 Little Mermaid movie made in the USSR. You can watch the whole thing on youtube, and it’s delightful.

The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite fairytales and is replete with Cancer symbols. From the depth of the ocean, to the depths of love for the prince, and the sacrifice made in the original story, this one always reminds me to walk with my heart open and to embrace my emotional intensity.

Add it to your summer watch list.

Cyanotype Printing

Sophie Lécuyer ‘s Apparitions

I’ve been anxiously awaiting this post as Cyanotype has been my creative obsession for months now but I knew I had to save it for Cancer. I chose Sophie Lécuyer’s work to represent the medium because I love her natural, feminine subject matter. This piece feels so enchanting and wise to me, it really captures the best of Cancer.

Cyanotype is made using chemicals painted on fabric which is then overlaid with leaves, cut outs, or photo negatives and set out in the sun. Wherever the light hits turns a gorgeous antique blue. This process is actually where we get the word “blueprint” from.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Cancer season is synonymous with summertime, so this solar powered art form fit in nicely here.

Sea Shell Wine Glasses

Set from Michelle Concept Store Glam

Okay last mermaid reference but I’m in love with these seashell wineglasses. It just feels like being invited to a dinner party in Atlantis and a pearl encrusted fish girl hands you her favorite pour in one of these.

Cancer is known for their nurturing nature and home creation sensibilities, making them some of the best hosts we have on the astrological wheel. Consider picking up a pair of these for any Cancer season birthdays you’re lucky enough to attend?

Thank you for joining me in this little corner of the interwebs for this enriching chat. I hope this kicks your summer off right and for the next month you practice feeling all your emotions and turning them into art.

xx
